ᴹQ. yá adv. “formerly, ago, at that (distant) time, then (long ago)” (Category: Past, Ago)
A word in The Etymologies of the 1930s glossed “formerly, ago” under the root ᴹ√YA “there, over there; of time, ago” (Ety/YA). In Demonstrative, Relative, and Correlative Stems (DRC) from 1948 yá was glossed {“then, some time ago” >>} “at that (distant) time” referring to the past (PE23/109, 110 note #121). In Tolkien’s later writings, yá became a relative pronoun or conjunction meaning “when”, as in yá hríve menë, ringa ná “when winter comes with us, it is cold” (VT49/23).
