N. #blab- v. “to flap, beat (wings etc.)” (Category: Wing)
A verb in The Etymologies of the 1930s glossed “flap, beat” derived from the root ᴹ√PALAP (Ety/PALAP), where it seems the initial [pl] became [bl]. Here “beat” is probably limited to the beating of wings.
Conceptual Development: The verb G. basga- “flap” appeared in the Gnomish Lexicon of the 1910s as an elaboration of G. bass “wing” (GL/22). It had a noun form G. bascovas “flapping and beating, especially of wings”.
Neo-Sindarin: Given S. plad “palm” < ✶palátā from the late 1960s, the sound change that produced N. blab- from ᴹ√PALAP may have been a feature of Noldorin but not Sindarin. Since we have only a couple of examples to work with, however, I’d retain the Noldorin form blab- for purposes of Neo-Sindarin until we get more information.
