Q. #caraxë, n. “[ᴹQ.] jagged hedge of spikes, [ᴱQ.] row of spikes or teeth” (Category: Physical World (other))

A word for a “jagged hedge of spikes” (Ety/KARAK), most notably used as an element in the name Helcaraxë, loosely translated as “Grinding Ice” (S/134; Ety/KARAK).

Conceptual Development: A similar form ᴱQ. karkasse or karkaras (karkarass-) “row of spikes or teeth” appeared in the Qenya Lexicon of the 1910s as an elaboration of ᴱQ. karka “fang, tooth” (QL/48), and ᴱQ. karkasse “row of teeth” appeared in the contemporaneous Poetic and Mythological Words of Eldarissa (PME/48). ᴹQ. karakse “jagged hedge of spikes” emerged in The Etymologies of the 1930s as a derivative of the root ᴹ√KARAK “sharp fang, spike, tooth” (Ety/KARAK).
