N. idhrin n. “year, *(lit.) year-circle” (Category: Year)
A word for “year” appearing in The Etymologies of the 1930s as N. iðrin (Ety/RIN) or îðrin with abnormal over-long î (Ety/YEN) derived from primitive ᴹ✶ı̯en-rinde as a combination of în “year” and rhinn “circle”, where the combination [nr] became [ðr] and the final nd > nn > n.
Neo-Sindarin: Many Neo-Sindarin writers update this word to ᴺS. idhrinn as suggested in Hiswelókë’s Sindarin Dictionary (HSD), since two-syllable words in Sindarin often retain final nn rather than reducing it to single n. Since it involves ᴹ√RIN “circle” this word necessarily refers to a solar year, and thus may help distinguish this period from Tolkien’s later [Quenya] use of ᴹ√YEN for a 144-year long year; see în for discussion.
