Q. Fíriel f. “She that Died; She that Sighed; Mortal Woman”

Q. Fíriel, f. “She that Died; She that Sighed; Mortal Woman”

A name given to Míriel after she became the first Elf to die of non-violent means (MR/250). This name is a compound of the verb fir- “expire” and the feminine suffix -iel. In the preface to the Adventures of Tom Bombadil, Tolkien translated her name as “mortal woman”. The same name Fíriel was given to the daughter of king Ondoher and wife of Arvedui (LotR/1049).
