S. #dar- v. “*to stop, halt” (Category: to Cease)
A Sindarin word best known in its imperative form daro “*stop!”, a command given by the Elves of Lórien to the Fellowship of the Ring when they entered their forest (LotR/342; PE17/51). The translation of this imperative “stop, halt” appeared in The Etymologies of the 1930s along with its [Noldorin-style] infinitive form N. deri under the root ᴹ√DAR “stay, wait, stop, remain” (Ety/DAR). In the first penciled version of this entry in The Etymologies, the infinitive form was dæri and the imperative was dero but these were rejected (EtyAC/DAR). The imperative form was daro in Lord of the Rings drafts of the 1940s (TI/226).
