Q. *linga- v. “*to hang, dangle” (Category: to Hang, Dangle)

Q. *linga-, v. “[ᴹQ.] to hang, dangle” (Category: to Hang, Dangle)
ᴱQ. pipte- “to fall (of folds or clusters), hang, trail”
ᴱQ. quiqui- “to hang, droop”

A verb appearing in The Etymologies of the 1930s glossed “hang, dangle” under the root ᴹ√LING “hang” (Ety/LING). A similar but untranslated form lingi- appeared in the second version of Tengwesta Qenderinwa (TQ2) from around 1950 (PE18/96). This 1950 form might be a root, but Tolkien said it was “in Quenya-form”, so could also indicate the continued existence of the verb linga-. This continued existence is also supported by the name S. Glingal “Hanging Flame” from The Silmarillion (SI/Glingal).

Conceptual Development: The Qenya Lexicon of the 1910s had a pair of forms ᴱQ. kinka- “to hang (intr.)” and ᴱQ. kinkata- “hang (tr.)”, possible precursors to linga-. The early verbs had rather unusual past forms: ekinkatte and ekinkatande, respectively.
