ᴹQ. -n(an) suf. “time” (Category: Quantity and Number (other))
A suffix for forming adverbs of time appearing in Demonstrative, Relative, and Correlative Stems (DRC) from 1948, with short form -n and long form -nan (PE23/109). In drafts the suffix was -nde (PE23/110 note #121).
Conceptual Development: The only other indication of the -nan outside of DRC is the word sinan “at present” in the Quenya Verbal System (QVS) from 1948 (PE22/125). However the suffix -n is associated with temporal adverbs as far back as the Early Qenya Grammar (EQG) of the 1920s, which had temporal adverbs ᴱQ. qí, qin “now”, ᴱQ. tyen “then”, ᴱQ. san “then” (PE14/55), the last of which also appeared in the Qenya Lexicon of the 1910s (QL/81). There were examples of sin or sín “now” as variants of ᴹQ. sí in the 1930s and 40s (Ety/SI; LR/47; SD/247, 310). There is little sign of -n as a suffix for temporal adverbs past 1948. It may appear in some conjunctions like yan “*as” and san “*then” (VT43/16-17; PE22/140), but those could be dative constructions instead (“for that”).
Neo-Quenya: I would avoid this suffix for purposes of Neo-Quenya, using better attested -llume instead.
