A root in the Qenya Lexicon of the 1910s glossed “foment, cherish, warm, bathe”, with derivatives ᴱQ. lúsina “warm, glowing, of things; of people, affectionate, hearty”, ᴱQ. lusta “warm water”, and ᴱQ. lusta- “bathe in warm water” (QL/55). As pointed out by Gilson, Hostetter, Wynne and Smith, “cherish” has an archaic sense “to keep warm” (QL/55), and Tolkien was also likely using “foment” in its older sense of “bathe with warm lotions”. There are no signs of this root in Tolkien’s later writing.
