A word given as G. elt “a change” in the Gnomish Lexicon of the 1910s, originally given as elt “a dig, a poke (probe), a tug, lug” (GL/32). I suspect the original gloss was based on the early root ᴱ√ELE “drive, push, thrust, send forth” (QL/35).
