S. Tarlang loc. “Stiff Neck; Stiff/Tough Passage”
A mountain ridge in Lamedon (LotR/790), translated “stiff neck” (RC/536) or “the stiff/tough passage” (PE17/92). It was apparently the adjective S. tarlang “stiff-necked” used as a name (PE17/92).
Conceptual Development: In Lord of the Rings drafts from the 1940s, this name first appeared as N. Tarlang (WR/411).
