The Etymologies of the 1930s had various rejected words for “first” tied to variations on “Firstborn” as a title of the Elves: ᴹQ. enna “first” under rejected entry ᴹ√EDE or ᴹ√EDEL “precede, come forward” (EtyAC/EDE), ᴹQ. esta “first” and ᴹQ. setta or setya “first, (?)prominent” under rejected ᴹ√SET “precede forward” (EtyAC/SET), as well as ᴹQ. esta “first” and ᴹQ. essea “(?)primary”, under the root ᴹ√ESE or ᴹ√ESET “precede” (Ety/ESE). The entry for the last of pair was not explicitly marked through, but it was marked with a “?” and conflicted with ᴹ√ES “indicate, name” and so was probably abandoned, perhaps replaced by *√YESET as in yesta “beginning” (PE17/120, LotR/1108-9).
