ᴹQ. essea¹ adj. “first, ?primary” (Category: First)
The Etymologies of the 1930s had various rejected words for “first” tied to variations on Firstborn as a title of the Elves: ᴹQ. enna “first” under rejected entry ᴹ√EDE or ᴹ√EDEL “precede, come forward” (EtyAC/EDE), ᴹQ. setta or setya “first, (?)prominent” under rejected ᴹ√SET “precede forward” (EtyAC/SET), and ᴹQ. essea with a difficult-to-read gloss, perhaps also “(?)prominent”, under the root ᴹ√ESE or ᴹ√ESET “precede” (Ety/ESE). The last of these was not explicitly marked through, but it was marked with a “?” and conflicted with ᴹ√ES “indicate, name” and so was probably abandoned, perhaps replaced by *√YESET as in yesta “beginning” (PE17/120, LotR/1108-9).
