This Early Qenya word for “shepherd” had many variant forms: in some cases the first vowel a was preserved as in māvar (alternately mavar, mavardo or māwar) and in other cases it collapsed onto oa as in moar(do), all derived from the early root ᴱ√MAWA (QL/60, 62). This reflects differing phonetic developments for ancient āwa, awá (> āva, avá) vs ắwa (> oa), as discussed in The Qenya Phonology (PE12/14).
