S. Girithron n. “December, *Shuddering-one” (Category: Names of the Months)

S. Girithron, n. “December, *Shuddering-one” (Category: Names of the Months)

Name of the twelfth month of the year in the Westron calendar (LotR/1110) corresponding to “December” (PM/136). It appears to be an elaboration of girith “shuddering”, perhaps meaning “*Shuddering-one”. It is also possible -ron is a reduced form of raun “moon” as suggested by David Salo (GS/361).

Conceptual Development: In drafts of The Lord of the Rings appendices, this name was already Girithron and it appeared with an alternate name Ephriw “*Before Winter” = eb “*before” + rhíw “winter” (PM/135-136).
