S. Panthael m. “Fullwise”

S. Panthael, m. “Fullwise”

A name given to Samwise by Aragorn in the “King’s Letter”, translated “Fullwise” (SD/129) in Tolkien’s unpublished epilogue to The Lord of the Rings. It seems to be a combination of pant “full” and the lenited form of sael “wise”. This name is thus probably pronounced Pant-hael and not Pan-thael.

Conceptual Development: In drafts of the epilogue, this name first appeared as N. Lanhail “Plain-wise” (SD/118), revised to Panthail (SD/120). These two forms seem to contain an earlier word N. sail “wise” based on Noldorin phonology: see N. [ai] revised to [ae].
