G. uchir n. “recklessness; carelessness; security” (Category: Peril, Danger)
A noun in the Gnomish Lexicon of the 1910s translated “recklessness; carelessness” but also “security” (GL/74), apparently a negated form of G. hîr “care, anxiety; heed” (GL/49). These seemingly opposite meanings appear to be intentional, since it has adjectival forms G. uchirthol “reckless” and G. uchirin “secure” (GL/74). Perhaps its meaning “security” originally came from “[lack of] security”, and uchirin “secure” is somehow double-negated.
