S. voiced spirants unvoiced before voiceless spirants; [{vð}{hx}] > [{fθ}]
Based on the example of iovhug > N. iofog “fruit drink” in rough notes from 1940 (TMME/53), it seems vh becomes f, and perhaps more generally the voiceless spirant h or ch [x] unvoiced a preceding voiced spirant. It is possible that the f in iofog is an orthographic representation of [v]. However N. Galathir (an early name of Celeborn in LotR drafts) may be another example of this change (TI/249), if it is a compound of galadh “tree” + hîr “lord” as seems likely: [ðh] or [ðx] > [θ].
