This glossary only includes words used in this course. For a more comprehensive (and searchable) dictionary of Elvish words, see the main Eldamo website:
This glossary includes various “reliability markers” that indicate the level of knowledge about a particular word, inflected form or English translation.
- Unmarked items are attested, which mean they appear somewhere in Tolkien’s writing.
- # items only appear in an inflected form, with the base word extracted from that inflection.
- † is used for archaic or poetic words.
- * items do not appear directly, but are deducible from other forms or the grammar of the language.
- ^ items are adapted from rejected or earlier forms of the language.
- ! items are fan-invented forms, also called neologisms = new words.
Certain items after the word indicate alternate or archaic forms.
- An item in parentheses indicates the stem form of nouns or adjectives when suffixes are added or in compounds.
- oron (oront-) n. “mountain” means inflected forms are based on oront-, such as plural oronti “mountains”.
- A [þ] represents an older pronunciation (IPA [θ] = “th”) for any s in the word.
- A [ñ-] represents an older pronunciation (IPA [ŋ] = “ng”) for an initial n- in the word.
- A [w-] represents an older pronunciation for an initial v- in the word.
- Forms marked pa.t. are for the past tenses of verbs.
