N. Caerost loc. “?-town”
Early name for the town S. Calembel in Lord of the Rings drafts from the 1940s (WR/437). Its final element appears to be ost “city, town”, but the meaning of its initial element is unclear. Roman Rausch suggested that it might be caer¹ “ten” or some derivative of ᴹ√KAY “lie down” (EE/3.45). It might also be caer² “flat isle” appearing in linguistic notes around the same period (PE22/126).
See S. Calembel for further discussion.
