N. ennin n. “Valian year” (Category: Year)

N. ennin, n. “Valian year, *(lit.) long year” (Category: Year)

A word for a “Valian year” in The Etymologies of the 1930s, a combination of ann “long” and în “year” so more literally “*long year” (Ety/YEN).

Neo-Sindarin: The length of a Valian year varied in Tolkien’s writing, but was generally about 10 normal years in the 1930s, 40s, and 50s. Since the concept of a Valian year is of little consequence to the culture of the Sindar as Tolkien imagined them in the 1950s and 60s, I tend to interpret ennin as an “Elvish long year” of 144 normal years, which in Quenya is expressed by Q. yén. See the entry for S. în for further discussion.
